Sat 24th of April 2010. Leeds and Millwall both won today and United leveled the London club's goal difference which was always important. Swindon may now have given themselves too much to do after a 2-2 draw at Wycombe. They are four points behind Leeds now. Charlton's draw at Exeter City leaves them five points behind with a much inferior goal difference. In fairness they are almost looking for snookers. Simon Grayson made a few changes today that many of us, myself included would not have made. Was Beckford worth a start ? The front two did both score in his absence, and Beckford came off the bench against a tiring defence to score two goals. It's hard to argue with a 4-1 win. Were we playing against a side that had nothing to play for and who had the suntan lotion already packed away ? The first sending off certainly was harsh, but the manger may rightly argue that you can only beat what is put in front of you. To win by three clear goals at this stage of the season against any side is a considerable achievement, especially when those nerves start to jangle. This was also the side that  Norwich needed a 90th minute Carrow Road goal to earn a 1-1 draw a couple of weeks ago. Next week Leeds travel to Charlton who may not have a lot to play for except which position in the Play-Offs they earn. Will they lie down for Leeds. Some how I doubt it. Millwall travel to a Tranmere Rovers side two points off survival, and desperate for a win. Which is the better fixture ? Who knows ? Swindon play a Brentford side who have already won points at Elland Road and The New Den. Will four more points be enough for Leeds ? That is simply something we can't risk. We have to go to Charlton and do what (out of form)Norwich did last week, win the game. We can't afford to go into the last match behind Millwall on points. Swindon, their opponents may not have a lot to play for by that time. Win these two matches and let's get promoted.

Sat 24th of April. Leeds United 4-1 Mk Dons. Att :  Team : 12 Higgs, 06 Naylor, 19 Parker (Howson 59, 33 Collins, 08 Kilkenny, 16 Johnson, 22 Hughes, 28 Gradel, 10 Becchio, 23 Snodgrass (Beckford 75), 24 Watt (McSheffrey 81), Unused Substitutes : 01 Ankergren, 26 Bromby,  13 Grella. Simon Grayson made wholesale changes to the side that fluffed its lines at Gillingham last week. Out went (perhaps unluckily)Jon Howson (thankfully)Mickey Doyle, and (perhaps unluckily) Bromby. In came (fortunately for him) Bradley Johnson in central midfield, Ben Parker went to left full and Sanchez Watt made his first United start on the left side of midfield. Jermaine Beckford was again overlooked for the Becchio/Gradel partnership. MK Dons were down to the bare bones with a manager that walked out and a side that was both deflated and thread bare with injuries. Lucas Radebe made a surprise pitch attendance but Leeds were once again slow out of the blocks. The Dons were poor at the back, and Sanchez Watt made them pay when he slid Becchio through on thirteen minutes to put United 1-0 up. Surely now Leeds would go on and make their goal difference count. Sadly not, as just seven minutes later the defence went to sleep and Lewington easily equalised for the Dons. Leeds were 2-1 up on 34 minutes when Gradel finished superbly inside the area. The visitors were reduced to ten men two minutes before half time when Doumbe's lunge on Watt was judged to be a red card offence. Snodgrass nearly made it 3-1 before the interval but Guret in goal made a fine save, and Gradel looked to have been fouled in the box for a penalty but the referee waved away the appeals. With 14 minutes to go, Simon Grayson sent on Jermaine Beckford for Snodgrass. It immediately reaped rewards when Beckford fired home on 79 minutes with a great strike. Beckford was then hauled down when through on goal, and the Dons were reduced to nine men. The penalty on 84 minutes made it 4-1. Leeds were smelling blood and poured forward at will with Beckford and Howson both missing great chances. The Dons were reduced to eight men when Peter Leven lunged at Neil Collins. One sad note for Leeds was Ben Parker breaking down with injury. Leeds couldn't get that elusive fifth goal but Simon Grayson was pleased with the 4-1 win : I thought we started the game well. I was disappointed to concede the goal but we went 2-1 up and should have had a penalty.  Obviously the sending off was a help to us. We said before the game our destiny was in our own hands. Our players have responded form last weeks defeat and done everything that we have asked of them. We have a difficult game next week as have Millwall. It was good to get the four goals and we could have scored more. But we have given ourselves a real opportunity to finish the job off. Re Jermaine Its a predicament, the other two do work hard and chase and harry, as Jermaine does. If I start with Max and Luciano they are looking over their shoulder. I want all my strikers looking over their shoulder, and obviously if the opposition sees a goal scorer with 30 goals come off the bench they start to worry.  I made a couple of decisions today and it may have been harsh on one or two , but hopefully the decision you make are the right ones, and today they seemed to have paid off. Millwall have won today but we can only affect ourselves. If we win two games we get promoted. We want to go into the last two games with a lot of form and we certainly are".

Sunday 17th. Congratulations to Norwich City for gaining promotion. After being defeated 1-7 at home on day one they were long odds to do so. It's all about consistency and the Canaries have shown this unlike Leeds, Millwall, Swindon or Charlton. Millwall were deservedly defeated at Huddersfiedd Town on Friday night whilst Charlton lost 0-1 at home to Norwich and Swindon stuttered to another 1-1 home draw, this time to Walsall. Leeds are fortunate still to have promotion in their own hands. Next up it's MK Dons at home who seem to have removed Paul Ince as manager and have nothing really to play for. Bristol Rovers in our last game, also at Elland Road have nothing to play for. Rovers are dangerous because of their inconsistency, but up front they have strikers who will worry a less nimble Leeds central defence.  But these are games that have to be won and neither side will roll over to let a nervous and at time cumbersome Leeds side gain victory. In between those games is the matter of an away match at promotion chasing Charlton. But remember, just because you have to win, doesn't mean you will win.  One point behind United are Kenny Jackett's boys from the New Den.  Millwall FC, is a club  like Leeds unloved by many. They have been jittery of late especially against London clubs. Their strong home form will surely be tested next time out against a tricky Leyton Orient side who may just have done enough to be clear of relegation. Two wins against Stockport and Norwich and an away draw at Exeter Proved Barry Hearns right to bring in Russel Slade in at the death to save the O's. Millwall then travel to Tranmere who are making a decent fist of it in trying to stay up. Ask Norwich City. Lastly, the Londoners must play Swindon Town at home where you would have to fancy them winning.  Two points behind Leeds finds Swindon Town FC, a side that has that has taken just 5 points from 12   since beating Leeds 3-0 away. Next up is Wycombe Wands, buoyed no doubt by their 3-2 win at MK Dons. That followed up wins at Tranmere and at home to Hartlepool. They won't be fazed by going to the County Ground having already drawn at Elland Road. They are five points from safety and will not roll over having gained 9 points from their last 3 matches. That is followed up by a home game versus in form Brentford who are unbeaten in 9 matches. During that run they have achieved wins against Huddersfield, Colchester and a draw at Millwall. Lastly, Swindon travel to Millwall, an interesting fixture. Charlton lie 3 points behind Leeds United in fifth. If they lost at Exeter City this Saturday, a side who were dragged back into the relegation dog fight by losing 3-1 at Tranmere Rvs, they will be more or less consigned to the Play-Offs. No top six side has won at Exeter City this season. Charlton then host Leeds and finish their campaign at a poor Oldham side. Of course in football nothing goes to form. There will be more swings than roundabouts. That said I would prefer to be in Leeds position right now with having a lead, even though it is only a slender point. It's what they do in the next three games that will shape our season and maybe Simon Grayson's future, and some of the bottom teams will have a say one way or another. Botton Seven reads : 17th. Yeovil 49 pts, 18th. L Orient 48 pts, 19th Gillingham 47 pts, 20th Exeter City 46 pts, 21st Tranmere Rvs 44 pts, 22nd Wycombe Wands 41 pts, 23rd Southend 39 pts, 24th Stockport County 25 pts.

Sat 16th of April Gillingham 3-2 Leeds United. Team : 12 Higgs, 06 Naylor, 26 Bromby 33 Collins, 04 Doyle, 08 Kilkenny, 14 Howson, 22 Hughes (Parker 55), 28 Gradel, 10 Becchio (Watt 77), 23 Snodgrass (Beckford 55). Unused Substitutes : 01 Ankergren, 21 Lowry, 15 McSheffrey, 09 Beckford, 13 Grella. Leeds showed their other side again just when cool and calm heads were needed. Unlike Carlisle, the Leeds defence faced a different threat of two bustling centre forwards with pace. Unlike Carlisle, Gillingham have a decent home record and are fighting for their lives. On a ground were we have never won, we were three goals down in just over a half an hour, as the United side gave an impoverished lesson in how not to defend. Collins and Naylor were all over the place, and the Gills through simple crosses had a field day. Adam Miller headed the home side ahead before turning provider for Mark Bentley to nod in a second. Two minutes later the rampant Gills made it three when Leeds's Richard Naylor headed into his own net. Just before half time Luciano Becchio scored a fine individual goal flattering us to go in 1-3 down. Wholesale changes were expected at half time. They didn't come as Leeds failed to get the early goal in the second half that in truth their play hadn't warranted. Beckford replaced the ineffective Snodgrass and Parker replaced Hughes on 55 minutes in the hope that new players could wipe out the first 33 minutes of madness. The Gills were defending gallantly and United lacked the guile to really cause them problems. Gradel, the player who has had a decent few weeks was having a nightmare, with every cross finding the Leeds away fans, or shooting when a team mate was in a better position. It was with astonishment when the effective Becchio was replaced by Sanchez Watt when Maxie was having such a poor game. The Argentine was not impressed with the substitution but Sanchez had an immediate effect on causing the Gills problems every time he got the ball. With five minutes to go, Beckford won a penalty and converted it to make it 2-3. The Leeds of early season would have made it 3-3 but this is a jittery version of same. Half chances were created but Gillingham did well to kill the game and Leeds left Gillingham with no points in front of a disappointed 3,000 plus travelling support. Four  Leeds players stood out as being truly awful today. Against quick forwards (similar to Swindon) Collins and Naylor are major liabilities. Gradel had a  terrible game up front and should have been withdrawn at half time, and Doyle should have been arrested after the match for impersonating a midfielder. When he is on his game he is okay, but when he constantly gives the ball away, take him off. United were exceptionally lucky that other results more or less went their way.  Gillingham manager Mark Stimson told BBC Radio Kent: "We faced a really good side in Leeds United and we had to go for it from the beginning and try and put them under pressure. We did that and we got our rewards. "You can't start a game at 20 to four and that's what we did," said Grayson. "We said to the players that this was going to be the hardest game of the season and it was because Gillingham have got such a good home record. "It mystifies you. We played really well for four games, but (against Gillingham) we just seemed to play as individuals. "We didn't do all the ugly side of the game that we needed to do because it's such a hard place to come to with the crowd on top of you, and we got out of the game what our first 40-minute performance deserved."

"After half an hour we were 3-0 up and standing on the sidelines you can't really believe that. But we knew Leeds would come into the game because they've got some quality players and I'm sure they'll go on and gain automatic promotion.

"But for us it was a fantastic three points and it gives us a chance now."

Next up it's Huddersfield v Millwall (live on Sky Friday night). On Saturday Leeds go to Gillingham who sit just one place above the automatic relegation trap door. Norwich visit Charlton and Swindon Town play hosts to Walsall.

Tues 13th of April. Carlisle United 1-3 Leeds United. Team : Leeds United : 12 Higgs, 06 Naylor,  26 Bromby, 33 Collins, 04 Doyle, 08 Kilkenny, 14 Howson, 22 Hughes, 28 Gradel (Grella 88), 10 Becchio (Beckford 88), 23 Snodgrass . Unused Substitutes : 01 Ankergren, 19 Parker, 21 Lowry, 15 McSheffrey, 24 Watt.  It's three wins in a row and one could hear the sigh of relief from Blessington to Emyvale, from Carrickmacross to Carlingford and from Dundalk to Drogheda. Elsewhere, Milwall needed a 95th minute goal to gain one point at Yeovil, Norwich slipped up again (this time at L Orient), Charlton defeated Colchester and Huddersfield beat Walsall 4-3. Simon Grayson kept faith with Luciano Becchio and Max Gradel up front and he was rewarded as Leeds raced out of the blocks. Gradel, Howson and Collins all went close in the first five minutes as the visitors aimed not only to gain revenge for their Decorator's Cup defeat but send a message back to League One rivals that the wagon was back on the road. Naylor then headed home but the referee blew for an infringement. Moments latter Snodgrass fired over when found by Gradel. It was all Leeds. On 13 minutes Becchio fired home after the Carlisle keeper dropped Snodgrass's free kick. Two minutes later Becchio missed a sitter when it looked easier to score. Leeds were firing on all cylinders but were failing to convert clear cut chances. Snodgrass forced a decent save from Collin in goal and from the the resulting corner, Collins almost headed home. Gradel then forced a great save from Collin after capitalising on a Harte mistake. If it was a boxing match it would have been all over, but football can be cruel. A minute before half time Richard Keogh headed home a superb Harte free kick. Would Leeds fold again like they have done so many times since January ? The answer in the negative came on 47 minutes when Maxie the twist Gradel got on the end of a cross to make it 2-1 to Leeds. The away support went ecstatic and were delirious three minutes later when Becchio made it 3-1 to Leeds. On 56 minutes Becchio was denied a hat-trick by a smart save. Marc Bridge Wilkinson went close with 20m minutes to go and Higgs made a decent save from Nadine. Leeds had several chances to increase their lead but it stayed at 3-1 with Grella and Beckford replacing the superb Becchio and Gradel in the final minutes. Leeds go back to second. They are six points behind Norwich, one point ahead of Millwall and three points ahead of fourth placed Swindon Town.

Monday April 12th. Swindon saw nerves get to them as they could only draw 1-1 at home to Exeter City, even if they did gain a late equaliser.

Whilst  Leeds United were gaining three valuable points, Millwall hammered Gillingham 4-0 to go 2nd. We will have to wait and see how Swindon react to the 3-0 hammering at out of form Colchester. They had not won in six matches and are locked in battle with Huddersfield for that sixth position. Norwich needed an injury time goal to spare their blushes at home to MK Dons. Huddersfield lost 3-0 at Brentford, a side who have caused all the top six sides  considerable trouble. Leeds go into 3rd just one point behind Millwall, but their goal difference is much better. Next up it's Carlisle away. Ian Harte scored his 17th goal of the season in their 2-1 win at Brighton. Millwall travel to Yeovil, a tricky fixture and Swindon play on Monday night against Exeter City who are surprisingly unbeaten in 8 games.

Sat April 10th. Leeds United 2-0 Southend. Leeds United team : 12 Higgs, 06 Naylor, 26 Bromby, 33 Collins, 04 Doyle, 08 Kilkenny, 14 Howson, 22 Hughes (Johnson 58 ), 28 Gradel, 09 Beckford (Becchio 58), 23 Snodgrass (Watt 85), Unused Substitutes : 01 Ankergren, 19 Parker, 15 McSheffrey, 13 Grella. Att 21,650 Three good things happened today. Leeds won three points, the team kept a clean sheet for the first time since Adam was a gasoon, and lastly Steven the Bull Quigley witnessed a Leeds win. Two bad things occurred. This was a side that we could have put to the sword and done wonders for our goal difference and Leeds fans continue to boo some of our players, notably Jermaine Beckford. Whether one is a fan or not of Mr Beckford booing players only has a negative affect on both the player and the team. The opposition lifts its game and so begins the road to ruin. United were poor in the first half creating only half chances and Beckford was living off scraps. Snodgrass, some distance away from the player we know he can be , perhaps had our best chance in the first half. It was the Shripmers who missed the best chance of the half. Things didn't improve much in the second period, and Grayson was forced to withdraw his high scoring striker(on 58 minutes - ample time for a change to affect the play) for the more bustling Becchio. The crowd approved of the move and within two minutes he set up the hard working Gradel who fired home Leeds opener. With seven minutes to go Gradel crossed superbly for Becchio and it was 2-0. Simon Grayson had the following to say : "The fans pay their money so they can chant things but they can only help players by getting behind them. Jermaine hasn't got a problem with it and nor have I. Strikers thrive on confidence and after going a few games without scoring maybe Jermaine's confidence is dwindling." He added: "I heard a few fans having a go at him and then some backed him. Luciano wasn't 100% fit to play but we had to change the system and the personnel and it worked. "I said the other day that I am not afraid to take my captain off or my leading scorer or a young kid if those decisions benefit the team." Southend manager Steve Tilson said: "I don't know the situation with Jermaine. He has scored a lot of goals and there was speculation about him leaving. "The way Jermaine performed, I would have liked him to have stayed on the pitch. Simon did what he had to do and it changed the game."

Going to wire for 2nd. Swindon travel to out of form Colchester next, followed by home games against Exeter and Walsall. They then travel to Wycombe and play at home to Brentford, followed by their last game, a corker at home to Millwall. Millwall play at home to Gillingham next, followed by away trips to Yeovil and Huddersfield Town. They then have a London derby at home to Leyton Orient followed by a trip to Tranmere Rvs and lastly an away trip to Swindon Town. Leeds play next at home to Southend, followed by away trips to Carlisle United and Gillingham. We then play host to MK Dons, travel to Charlton and finish up at home to Bristol Rovers. Charlton's next go to Southampton, followed by home games against Colchester and Norwich. Their home game to Leeds is sandwiched between away games at Exeter City and Oldham. Should be an interesting finale.

Monday April 5th. Yeovil Town 1-2 Leeds United. Leeds United Team : 12 Higgs, 06 Naylor, 26 Bromby, 33 Collins , 04 Doyle, 08 Kilkenny (Johnson 88), 14 Howson, 22 Hughes, 28 Gradel, 09 Beckford (Watt 88), 23 Snodgrass. Unused Substitutes : 01 Ankergren, 19 Parker, 21 Lowry, 07 Dickov, 13 Grella,  Yet again Simon Grayson shuffled his pack with Gradel starting up front for Grella, Andy Hughes shifting to left back, and Lowry replaced by Bromby who played at right back. Grayson went for an experienced back four of Bromby, Hughes, Naylor and Collins. United started slowly with the hosts (backed by a strong breeze)  having the better of the early exchanges. Snodgrass went close with a fine effort and Gradel was unsettling the Yeovil back four with his constant runs across the line. Many including myself would not have been enamoured by the Ivory Coast player getting a starting place up front in place of the always hard working Grella. He was to prove the doubters wrong with a blend of hard work, no little skill and some astuteness. This is not a game his striking partner, Jermaine Beckford will look back on with fond memories. On 29 minutes, Richard Naylor's looping back-post header from a Jonny Howson cross gave United the lead with their first goal in over six hours of football. Five minutes later, the Leeds captain doubled their advantage with another header from a Neil Kilkenny corner. Leeds were very much on top playing with some resemblance of their old swagger. In the second half United began to dominate but missed chance after chance. Naylor twice went close to nailing his hat-trick within the space of five minutes as Yeovil simply couldn't stop the former Ipswich town striker from getting free headers at will. It was good to see Leeds at last score goals from set pieces instead of conceding them. Snodgrass (the main offender from poor set-plays in the past) went close again forcing a super save from McCarthy and Gradel was unlucky not to score with McCarthy's feet denying him. It was all Leeds and thoughts of another 4-0 hiding against Yeovil were not unrealistic. Confidence is a fragile thing, and on 66 minutes after Doyle (who in my opinion had another terrible match in midfield) lost the ball, Yeovil broke and Dean Bowdwich fired home through Naylor's legs into Higgs' bottom left hand corner. Leeds began to panic, losing their composure and booting the ball up front at every available opportunity. The hosts had one great chance to level but couldn't force the ball home. When the numbers came up for changes, Beckford should not have been surprised to be displaced by Watt on 89 minutes, completing the substitutions with Johnson for Kilkenny It was our first glimpse of the Arsenal loanee (much too short a glimpse) but he battled gamely and could be a worth while addition. Goodness knows that Simon Grayson must be due a good one by now. The good bits today complied of 1. obviously gaining three points, 2. the energetic and useful contribution of Gradel up front (which may be of more use away from home when teams have to come on to us) 3. the better set piece deliveries from corner kicks and Naylor's captain's performance. The bad bits compiled of 1. how we gave the initiative away to a poor side after they scored, 2. the continual misplacement of Jon Howson wide on the right who looks like a fish out of water and this puts extra pressure on Bromby who is a centre half and not a right full, even though I thought he had a useful game, and always tries to use the ball intelligently. Lastly, I thought Doyle was very poor in the middle and surely Howson could have been moved in there instead of losing Kilkenny who at least tried to keep hold of the football. We went second for a few minutes until Millwall continued their rich vein of form with a win at dreadful Colchester. Swindon not surprisingly won at home to 10 man Tranmere and Charlton have gone a little unnoticed with their 1-0 at home to Carlisle.

People keep telling me that this Leeds side should be good enough to go up automatically. I beg to differ. In fact, I believe we were stronger last season. The side that drew 1-1 against Millwall when the manger got his tactics wrong in the away leg was as follows : Ankergren, Douglas, Naylor, Sodje, Parker ( Johnson 78), Snodgrass, Kilkenny (Robinson 36), Howson, Delph, Beckford, Becchio . Apart from the goalkeeper can you honestly tell me that Lowry is better than Parker, Doyle better than Douglas and who was better than Delph ? How we have missed Delph's scintillating runs through midfield this season. 8M has been replaced by who exactly ? Is this Simon Grayson's fault or Ken Bates ? Perhaps a mixture of the two. Our loan signings have been disastrous. We have spent approximately 350,000 in acquiring Bromby and Gradel. Lets look at the loan rangers : Sam Volkes (did modestly okay without setting the world on fire), Shane Lowry (very poor), Collins (average), McSheffrey (contributed nothing). Gradel when on loan was very good, but no sooner has the ink dried on his contract than he has hardly kicked a ball. Shall I continue ? Panic has set in now with the manger changing tactics like skittles especially at the back.  Are we good enough to go up automatically ? Injuries to key players like Kisnorbo, Parker and Becchio have not helped. Millwall started the campaign badly because they had so many players out injured plus a hangover from losing at Wembley to Scunthorpe. Not my words but those of manager, Kenny Jackett. Swindon invested heavily and that is paying reward and Norwich lost none of the players that played in the Championship. Leeds on the other hand invested in the loan market and have been found out. Charlton, the side nobody is talking about are level on points with Leeds, just one behind Millwall and two behind Swindon.  Our own Terry McQuaid who attended the game yesterday, and is therefore better qualified than most to comment has this to say : "In the first half yesterday we were miles better. It was Leeds v Lucas. They scored and we collapsed. That said I fancy us in the Play-Offs if only for third time lucky". The sad thing is that it will be the fourth time. Don't forger 1987. Then again maybe I'm being too harsh, and as Simon Grayson suggests "we are well capable of winning all the remaining games". Possible but improbable. One thing for sure which can only be a good thing for me personally is that I suspect we won't have a clamour for Play-Off final tickets based on all of those who said they would never travel to watch Leeds again at Wembley in a Play-Off decider. Of course there is the little matter of getting there first. Thanks for that any way lads. You don't know how much easier that will make my life.

Sat April 3rd 2010. Leeds United 0-3 Swindon Town. Leeds United team : 12 Higgs, 06 Naylor (Parker 60), 21 Lowry, 33 Collins, 04 Doyle (Gradel 60), 08 Kilkenny, 14 Howson, 22 Hughes, 09 Beckford, 13 Grella (Dickov 75), 23 Snodgrass Unused Substitutes : 01 Ankergren, 26 Bromby, 16 Johnson, 24 Watt. Billy Paynter scored twice as Swindon went second in League One with victory over faltering Leeds at Elland Road. Leeds have now gone 385 minutes without a goal and lie 11 points behind leaders Norwich in fourth place. Andrew Hughes wasted their best chance from six yards before slipping to allow Paynter in to fire home from close in. Soon after the break Paynter turned and fired into the top corner and with Leeds in disarray he crossed for Charlie Austin to head the third. Leeds were team in the first half but collapased when they went one behind. The second half was one way traffic as an average Swindon team made Leeds look like Choirboys. They were the second team in the the last two home games to take maximum points of United this season. How Simon Grayson must regret letting man of the match, Jon Douglas leave for free last season. The Monaghan player controlled the midfield as the Wiltshire side put six goals past Leeds this season without reply.

Leeds have now lost four games in a row and are in danger of having to compete in the play-offs for the third consecutive season
