Nov late round up. Fat Boy Andy Robinson has had his contract terminated with United by mutual consent. Rumour has it he may apply for a role with Pukka pies. Luciano Becchio was named PFA Championship fan's player of the month for November. Well deserved ! Rumours circulate that Leeds are to tie up permanent deals in January for Andy O'Brien and George McCartney- former ROI and NI internationals.
Sun Nov 28th. United head to Emirates in FA Cuo 3rd round FA Cup draw. FA Cup legend Allan Clarke believes his old club Leeds United can’t lose after landing a third-round plum tie at Arsenal. Clarke, scorer of the goal that defeated the Gunners in Wembley’s Centenary final in 1972, taking the Cup to Leeds for the first and only time, said: “It’s an unbelievable draw. “We can’t lose because if we get knocked out Ken Bates will have a good pay-day and if we win it will be another giant-killing act after last season’s victory at Old Trafford. “Remember we drew at Tottenham last season as well, and this will be a great experience for the lads to play at another top Premier League club.” Clarke watched today's third-round draw on ITV from his sick bed after struggling to throw off a flu bug and, although he won’t be travelling to the game on the weekend of January 8 and 9, if it is televised he says he will be glued to the screen. Clarke added: “Obviously it would have been better if the game had been at Elland Road. “We are the underdogs with nothing to lose, just as we were before the game at Manchester United at this stage last season. Our fans will have a good day out whatever happens. "Obviously people will be thinking that game in 1972 against Arsenal was the only time we won the Cup, so let’s hope it’s a good omen.”
Sat Nov 27th. Reading 0-0 Leeds United. 01 Schmeichel, 02 Connolly, 04 Bruce, 29 McCartney, , 07 Gradel (McCormack 76), 08 Kilkenny, 14 Howson, 16 Johnson, 10 Becchio, 23 Snodgrass Unused Substitutes : 12 Higgs, 05 Collins, 17 Faye, 22 Hughes. It must surely be coincidental that both 0-0 matches that Leeds featured in this season were against two of the most footballing sides in the division, Doncaster and now Reading. The weekend results mean that Leeds slip down to 5th after two away draws in a row. Reading and Leeds produced some late drama but had to be content with a point apiece in a game of few chances. The home side came close to snatching a late victory when Michail Antonio's angled shot hit the post. Leeds also came close late on when Jonny Howson's goalbound shot was brilliantly saved by Reading goalkeeper Adam Federici in stoppage time. The Royals have now drawn four league games on the trot, while Leeds are unbeaten in six outings. A draw appeared the fairest result from a game in which the defences were on top for the most part. There was little to separate the teams and a drilled Robert Snodgrass free-kick from the edge of the penalty area on the half-hour mark was a rare attempt on goal. Reading responded when a shot from Jem Karacan flew over the crossbar before Noel Hunt's volley was blocked by Leeds winger Max Gradel. Zurab Khizanishvili went closest to breaking the first-half deadlock when he headed Jobi McAnuff's corner inches wide of the post. After the break, Royals defender Ian Harte almost scored against his former club only to see his goalbound free-kick turned away by Leeds keeper Kasper Schmeichel at full stretch. Leeds midfielder Bradley Johnson headed the wrong side of the post after 85 minutes before Antonio and Howson went close in the dying moments of the match. Simon Grayson : “I’m certainly happy with a point. This is a difficult place to come, they have some really good attacking options. I’m pleased with the clean sheet .The players put their bodies on the line. You do need the breaks but we looked dangerous on the counter attack. That was the disappointing side of our game that we didn’t work their goal enough from the 18 yard line. But that is something we haven’t been lacking in recent weeks. You have to sacfrifice that part of your game. I’m delighted that we worked ever so hard and another well earned point in front of our big travelling support. We changed to a 4 4 2 to make sure we are solid but give us a break when attacking. (Re Gradel) well I seen it on the DVD and Max has probably caught him with his boot, but the referee decided what he had to do and gave him a yellow card. It wasn’t the cleverest thing to do after last season and he has to watch himself but Andy Griffin is a clever and experienced campaigner and probably was winding him up. Max is passionate about this football club but he has to channel that aggression into the right points of the football team”.
Mon Nov 21st. News update. Andy O'Brien believes Leeds team-mate Jonny Howson is playing well enough to be considered for a place in the full England squ ad. Central defender O'Brien, who has started in all five of Leeds' matches since arriving on loan from Bolton last month, also feels several other players at Elland Road would not be out of place in the Premier League. O'Brien, 31, said: "I think Jonny Howson should have had a place in the last England squad because he's playing as well as any midfielder in England. "He scored a great hat-trick at Scunthorpe and he's a really talented player. I can't believe Robert Snodgrass isn't a regular in the Scotland squad either. "If I'm honest it has surprised me, I was expecting a good standard, but I have been surprised how tough the Championship is. "I think many of the players in the squad would be fine going straight into the Premier League and some of them even further than that." Meanwhile Kasper Schmeichel has accused referee Mick Russell of costing Leeds United a precious victory over Norwich City with a decision which left the goalkeeper "dumbfounded". Schmeichel laid the blame for Saturday's 1-1 draw at the door of the match official, criticising Russell for the debatable equaliser which earned Norwich a point at Carrow Road. The Danish keeper appeared to be pushed to the ground by Norwich striker Chris Martin seconds before Leon Barnett scored in the 65th minute, but the effort was allowed to stand by Russell despite Schmeichel's protests. Schmeichel said the decision was "exceptionally wrong" and expressed anger at the refusal of Russell or his assistants to explain it to him afterwards. United's draw at Carrow Road maintained an unbeaten run which stands at five matches but Schmeichel insisted he had been confident of seeing out a 1-0 win despite Norwich's growing pressure. "Our performance was excellent and we deserved three points," Schmeichel said. "Before their goal I'd have backed us to stop them scoring. I was sure we'd see the game out. "Some decisions dumbfound you and this is one of them. I'm very angry and very frustrated. He (Martin) pushed me in the chin – he looked straight at me and then shoved me over. He knew what he was doing and if the referee looks at it again then he'll see that he was exceptionally wrong. "I asked the referee and the linesman where they were looking but they wouldn't give me an answer. "All you want is a bit of honesty. If I make a mistake then I'm held accountable whereas they're not obliged to speak to anyone, including the players. It's wrong. "If the foul's given it's a different game and I feel like we've lost a victory because of it. We were so good for so much of the game and we deserved to win."Grayson said: "I'll give the referee credit because he played a good advantage for our goal but anyone who watches their goal will see a blatant push. "Kasper doesn't go down easily or for the sake of it when it's a corner against us." Schmeichel's defiant performance in the second half at Carrow Road was crucial in ensuring that Leeds held on for a draw as Norwich threw players forward. The 24-year-old said United's defensive display was their most convincing for many weeks and believes the habitual errors which compromised the club's results earlier in the season have finally been eradicated. "It's something we've been working on," he said. "We realised that we needed to eliminate mistakes from our game and the defence looked organised. "On this occasion, we can't blame ourselves because their goal was out of our hands."In that respect, we did everything right and everything we could to win the game." Elsewhere, Leeds players on loan were certainly doing well. Mike Grella scored Carlisle's first goal, Aidy White got then winner on his Oldham debut at Dagenham and ex Leeds midfiled star scored Birmingham's winner at home to Chelsea.
Sat Nov 19th 2010. Norwich City 1-1 Leeds United. 01 Schmeichel, 02 Connolly, 04 Bruce, 29 McCartney , 07 Gradel, 08 Kilkenny(McCormack 88), 16 Johnson, 10 Becchio, 23 Snodgrass. Unused Substitutes : 12 Higgs, 22 Hughes, 09 Paynter, 27 Somma, 44 Ref: RussellLeon Barnett's second-half header salvaged a point for Norwich against Leeds at Carrow Road, with the referee missing a Martin push on Schmeichel. Max Gradel gave Leeds the lead when he fired low into the bottom corner for his third goal of the season. But defender Barnett levelled midway through the second half when he headed in David Fox's corner to ensure a fourth straight draw for Norwich. Gradel saw another effort tipped over by Norwich keeper John Ruddy, while Kasper Schmeichel denied Chris Martin. Norwich desperately went looking for a winner but were denied again by Schmeichel, who superbly blocked Elliott Ward's effort. And late in the game Canaries midfielder Andrew Crofts dragged his shot wide from 12 yards out. Norwich have now won only one of their last eight league matches, although they lie well-placed in eighth. Leeds are a point ahead in fifth, having won three and drawn two of their games since successive home defeats. Simon Grayson will be happy with a point but knows his charges could have had all three after dictating most of the first half. One last note. Maxi Gradel is the Aidan McGeady of Leeds. He tortured the Canaries the entire afternoon, scored a deserved goal, but so often his final cross his poor.
Mon 15th Friday 19th. News round up. South African coach, Pitso Mosimane was delighted with Davide Somma's debut for his country in the defeat to the USA. Mike Grella has extended his loan stay with Carlisle until January 3rd, but Leeds have inserted a 24 hour recall clause. Grella has already scored twice for the Cumbrians who are in the play-off places currently. Paul Dickov's Oldham have secured the services of left sided player, Aidy White until January 3rd, and Adam Clayton has joined Peterboro on a one month loan deal. Simon Grayson has signaled his intent with securing first team experience for all three young United peripherals. Elsewhere, Bradley Johnson surely has shot himself in the foot by rejecting the club's three year contract. The former Northampton player has been placed on the transfer list, and despite all the talk of still being available for selection may have moved down the manager's pecking order. It will be interesting to see the fans' reactions at Carrow Road in the away end. Last year Leeds lost Jermaine Beckford on a Bosman, but Johnson is no Beckford. On many Leeds fan sites, most have vented their surprise that Johnson was offered a three year deal in the first place.
Sat Nov 14th. Leeds United 3-1 Bristol City. Team : 01 Schmeichel, 02 Connolly, 04 Bruce, 29 McCartney, 40 O'Brien , 08 Kilkenny, 14 Howson, 16 Johnson, 23 Snodgrass, 27 Somma Unused Subs : 30 Brown, 05 Collins, 22 Hughes, 44 McCormack. Att - 27,567. Nearly 20 strong, the Louth branch converged on Leeds desperate to witness the men in White win a football match in their presence. Padna Lane, Steven Quigley and Paul Oliphant had failed miserably on previous attempts. No surprise there with those black Garfields. Alas, this time there were no black cats present as The wee county faithful witnessed a sublime Luciano Becchio hat-trick in under twenty minutes, to push Leeds into the top 5. BBC Sport : Substitute Luciano Becchio scored a second-half hat-trick as Leeds beat Bristol City to record their first home league win in five matches. Becchio, a second-half replacement for Davide Somma, headed Leeds into the lead but this was cancelled out by Jon Stead's close-range finish for City. Two minutes later, Leeds regained the lead when Becchio slammed home after Lloyd Sam's shot was parried. The Argentine completed his treble late on through another header. Leeds have now taken 10 points from their last four matches, but had not earned maximum points at home since a 2-1 win over Sheffield United on 25 September. City came into the game on the back of a five-game unbeaten run and for much of the game, they matched the home side. Somma had a shot saved by City keeper David James and Bradley Johnson shot wide for Leeds, but at the other end City could have taken the lead had Jamal Campbell-Ryce been more accurate with a volley. Becchio's introduction made all the difference to the home side and in the 66th minute he headed home Robert Snodgrass' cross to give them the lead. But, two minutes later City were level when Albert Adomah's cross from the right caught the Leeds defence flat-footed and Stead swept the ball home from six yards. However, with their very next attack Leeds regained the lead when James could only parry Sam's 20-yard drive and Becchio was on hand to fire home. On-loan Sunderland defender George McCartney provided the cross for Becchio to he ad in his third and secure all three points for Leeds. The two-goal advantage was preserved by a superb save from Kasper Schmeichel late on when he tipped over Steven Caulker's header and also denied City substitute Brett Pitmann
Weds Nov. 10th. Bristol City prepared for their visit to the Championship's biggest side on Saturday with an impressive win at Swansea who humbled Cardiff City last Sunday. Jon Stead grabbed the goal. Elsewhere Sheff United had a surprise draw at Leicester City and Cardiff won a point at Reading. Leeds draw takes them in eight position, level on points with sixth placed Coventry City.
Tues Nov 9th. Leeds 2-2 Hull City. Att - 24,907. 01 Schmeichel, 02 Connolly, 04 Bruce, 29 McCartney, 40 O'Brien, 07 Gradel 08 Kilkenny 14 Howson, 16 Johnson, 10 Becchio 23 Snodgrass. Unused Substitutes : 30 Brown, 05 Collins, 09 Paynter, 27 Somma. From Daily Mail : Leeds' vulnerability at Elland Road reared itself once more as they gifted 10-man Hull a late equaliser in a bruising Yorkshire derby which stopped the home side moving into the Championship play-off places. Bradley Johnson, who had earlier drawn his side level, sliced into his own net eight minutes from time just as it appeared Simon Grayson's team were about to end their winless run at home - they came into this game on the back of three defeats. Victory would have lifted Leeds into fifth and strengthened their bid for back-to-back promotions. That looked on the cards after they overturned Hull's early lead, provided by John Bostock, who was later sent off in a heated finale. Hull captain Ian Ashbee - recalled after a six-week absence - was arguably lucky not to follow him when he floored Luciano Becchio with what appeared to be a stray elbow. But referee Kevin Friend took no action. 'I have seen it again and I don't think it's too clever - he's got a lump above his eye,' said Grayson. 'I spoke to the referee afterwards and made my feelings clear. It is up to him what he does now.' The feeling that Hull, whose momentum appears to be taking them in the opposite direction to Leeds following relegation from the Premier League last season, had got off the hook was enhanced as they were rewarded for their perseverance when substitute Tom Cairney's corner from the right was sliced in by Johnson at the near post. Hopes of only a second win in Leeds in 89 years surfaced when Bostock netted a 30-yard free-kick. After picking himself up from a foul by Johnson, he hit a torpedo bey ond Kasper Schmeichel into the top corner. It was only the 18-year-old's second goal of the season and his previous strike, on the opening day against Swansea, was of similar ilk and distance. 'We went behind to a wonder strike but it was a game we should have won,' said Grayson. The response from Leeds was limited to long-range efforts, however, until an Anthony Gerrard error gifted them an equaliser. Declining the opportunity to nod the ball to the onrushing Matt Duke, Gerrard's fluffed back-header left the Hull defence exposed and the goalkeeper had not regained his position when Becchio diverted the ball into the path of Johnson, who drove in from the edge of the area. Leeds displayed a greater tempo after the break and captain Jonny Howson nearly scored seven minutes after the restart when Duke flapped at a corner - but his sliced drive clipped the side-netting. Leeds hit the front in the 71st minute when Robert Snodgrass made room down the right and his cross was headed in off an upright by Andy O'Brien. But Hull fought back against the odds and Pearson said: 'We played with a lot more drive and belief than in recent games". Seven points gained from nine but two points dropped today.
Tues Nov 9th. Somma signs on. South African-born striker David Somma, who has been in brilliant form for Leeds United in the early part of this season, has been rewarded with a three-year new deal. Somma, whose one-year contract was due to expire at the end of the season, extended his stay on Tuesday. The 25-year-old, who is the club’s leading goalscorer with seven, signed just before their clash against Hull City this weekend. “I’m delighted to sign,” Somma told Leeds United website. “When I came here to try out and never imagined I would be in this position. Last season I thought I did what I had to do when I went out on loan, and that gave me the extra confidence to come back here. “I have worked hard and the club acknowledges that, and I’m really happy to sign a three-year contract. I can concentrate on the games as I’m signed and ready to go. “My aim is to get goals and play a part in getting the club in the Premier League. It’s been a great start to the season, there’s great staff here, and it’s a great club to be at. Since I've arrived everyone has made me feel welcome, the fans are fantastic, and I’m delighted to commit my long-term future.” Somma’s form this season has attracted the attention of the Sout African coach, who has hinted he could call the striker up for the Mandela Challenge against USA next Wednesday
Sun Nov 7th. What the stats say about LUFC Fifteen games in. Leeds sit in 8th position after fifteen matches, with 23 points on the board. That's 1 point from the Play-Offs and 11 points above the bottom three with an average 1.5 points per game. At home United have accumulated 9 points from a possible 21 points. Only five sides have accumulated less points at home than Leeds. They are Scunthorpe, Sheff United, Preston, Bristol City and Crystal Palace, and all are below Leeds in the table. United have won three and lost four at home. On the road United have gained 14 points from a possible 24, winning four, drawing two and lost two. Only the top 2 sides in the division, QPR and Cardiff City have gained more points on the road, and even at that, both have gained just 1 more point than Leeds, although they have both played a match less on the road. Leeds United have conceded 28 goals in 15 matches, with 16 of them conceded in front of their own fans and 12 conceded on the road. No side has conceded more goals in front of their own fans in the division, with many having played one game more. Eight sides have conceded more goals than Leeds on the road, but none are above Leeds in the table. Only two sides have a bigger goals against column in total. They are Crystal Palace and Preston and both are in the bottom four. United have scored 26 goals in 15 games. Only QPR and Cardiff City have scored more goals than Leeds United. Leeds have a minus 2 goal difference, with six sides below them having a better goal difference, but less points than United. The stats are clear. If Leeds can stop conceding goals, particularly at home, and find the same prolific scoring form at home as they do away from home, the play-offs are easily achievable. Over to you lads and of course Simon Grayson.
Sat Nov 6th. Coventry City 2-3 Leeds United. Att- 28,184. Leeds United team : 30 Brown, 02 Connolly, 05 Collins, 29 McCartney, 40 O'Brien, 07 Gradel, 08 Kilkenny, 14 Howson, 17 Faye (Johnson 62), 10 Becchio, 23 Snodgrass Unused Substitutes : 12 Higgs, 04 Bruce, 11 Sam, 33 Nunez. Credit must go to Simon Grayson for not only picking the right side, but handling the McSheffrey perfectly. He gets criticised on this forum when he gets it wrong but he got it right today. It’s good to see Robert Snodgrass get his mojo back. It’s great to see Gary McSheffrey receive the perfect answer from Leeds United, on the park where it counts. And, as for Aidy Boothroyd, if God wanted us to see football played in the air he would have built pitches in the sky. The man who has no fear of taking on Leeds after he beat them in Cardiff, got a football lesson today, and it should have been all over at half time. Now let's start doing it at home. I don’t often like the Daily Mail but this report was on the money :How many times in the course of a lifetime does the neutral leave a football ground feeling empathy for Leeds United? If the answer is an entirely predictable 'never’, then that legion of non-partisan supporters should have been at the Ricoh Arena on Saturday, where the visitors prevailed in a rousing contest of contrasting styles. Despite Coventry City’s spirited second-half recovery, Leeds emerged with their third successive away win, a victory for fluent football that lifted them to the fringes of the play-off places. Even their often maligned followers deserved credit, booing substitute Marlon King’s every touch, a timely prick of the Coventry conscience, perhaps, after their decision to employ a player who has only recently been released from prison following his conviction last year for sexual assault and actual bodily harm on a slight 20 year-old student. Those 6,000 travelling fans were rewarded early on when Jonathan Howson headed Leeds into a fourth-minute lead after a clever dink across the six-yard box by Robert Snodgrass. The same combination created what should have been a second goal, but Howson’s header was off target this time. However, Snodgrass redeemed his captain just before half-time with a fine left-foot shot to double the lead. This was the largest league crowd, 28,184, at the Ricoh Arena since it opened five years ago, the pity being that the lush, flat turf befitting such a splendid stadium is seldom troubled by the crude, long-ball tactics employed by manger Aidy Boothroyd. But the plan reaped a dividend early in the second half as a high ball into the penalty area eventually fell to Lukas Jutkiewicz whose close-range header reduced the arrears. On the hour, however, Richard Keogh’s clumsy challenge felled Max Gradel in the 18-yard box, and the Leeds winger converted the penalty to restore the two-goal cushion. That was eroded when Ben Turner’s low effort eluded Leeds goalkeeper Jason Brown in the 64th minute, again the result of a lofted centre falling from the skies. Leeds, though, held on deservedly. Coventry harbour ambitions that many feel are beyond their station, but they remain in the top six, propped up by a frenetic high-ball tempo that is likely to defeat lesser sides than Leeds. It causes headaches for opposing defenders but no dilemma for purists, who surely would have acclaimed the beautiful game to which Simon Grayson’s team aspired : “It was a hard fought victory against a team in a great run of form. They look to get balls in from set pieces but we tried to get the ball down and play. They put pressure on you. It was great start. A great cross by Robert and Jonny scored. I thought Robert Snodgrass was very good and got a goal of the highest calibre. We switched off and they put long balls in , throw ins corners and sometimes they fall for you but we defended as a team. Individuals like Snodgrass and Howson (but particularly Snodgrass) worked ever so hard by closing the play down. There are many ways to win a football match. To win three away games on the trot is a fine achievement . Regarding the penalty it was a definite penalty. It was down to the players and Max felt comfortable and confident and he’ll stay on them if he feels comfortable. We switched around at the back because Neil is three to four inches taller than Alec and they put ball in the box as soon as possible. Also we alternate the players in the squad. Players have to be patient and wait for opportunity and when they get it they have to take it. Jason stepped in for new dad Kasper and did really well for us. We have to prepare for Tuesday night and everyone is in contention. The biggest league crowd ever at Coventry is a credit to our travelling support. They are so good they actually lift the home support to get behind the home team. The fans are fantastic and really outstanding and today they go home happy. Hopefully they can see us get back to winning ways on Tuesday at home.” And so say all of us !
Nov 5th. 2010 Leeds boss has his say. Leeds United boss Simon Grayson has refused to be involved with the comments made by Gary McSheffrey that him and Michael Doyle should have been awarded contracts by Leeds last season. Speaking to the Telegraph and Argus, former Leicester and Aston Villa player Grayson said: "Players are entitled to their opinions but I am not going to get into a war of words with McSheffrey. "It isn't the first time a player has been disappointed about not signing for a fantastic club like Leeds. I am just concerned with getting the best out of my players when we take on Coventry. "I was really excited about signing Gary on loan from Birmingham in January. He helped us get promoted, as did Michael Doyle, but I made a decision at the end of the season that there were other avenues to go down by signing different personnel. I felt the decision was right for Leeds and the pair of them left. "When Gary left it's not as if I never spoke to him about what was going to happen. He has found his home in Coventry and done well recently by scoring a few goals and I wish him and Michael well after the weekend. Well said Larry, now put up a copy of McSheffrey's comments on the dressing room wall .
Nov 3rd. Ken has his say. Ken Bates never one to miss a good dig at someone had this to say about Gary McSheffrey's recent comments :"When you go on loan to a club you have a magnificent opportunity. It's a chance to get under the spotlight and the fact of the matter is he was very disappointing."He added: "He didn't make an impact. It was down to him not Simon Grayson. If you want to be successful you look in the mirror and ask 'what could I have done?'"No doubt he will be trying to prove us wrong and him right on Saturday. He has done well for them and I would say you're better letting your feet do the talking."
Nov 2nd. Bradley Johnson has tuned down the offer of a new three year contract. His contract expires at the end of the season and he is free to talk to other clubs from January.
Nov 1st. 2010. McSheffrey plans revenge. Gary McSheffrey, "not one for sour grapes" intends on showing Leeds United and more so, Simon Grayson, on what he missed out on when he"allowed" the player sign for Coventry City. McSheffrey has had a decent start to the season at the Sky Blues scoring four goals in his last five games. "Leeds had first dibs on me in the summer, but Simon Grayson wasn't having me, simple as that. Michael Doyle played 55 games for them last year and I think the first two signings they should have made in the summer were me and Doyler. "But Simon Grayson and his staff didn’t want me – it’s as simple as that. I haven’t spoken to him since I left, which I find a bit disappointing on a man-to-man basis. You expect better man management really, a bit more respect, but that’s all in the past now and there are no sour grapes. McSheffrey is back at the club where he started as a 16-year-old, becoming the Premier League’s youngest player at that time before moving to Birmingham in 2006. He added, “Working under managers like Steve Bruce and Alex McLeish, they want the attacking play but they also want the work ethic too. “I have learned that you have to put the shift in before personal glory.” McSheffrey’s first half header condemned the Blades to another home defeat at Bramall Lane and lifted Coventry to fourth place in the Championship. McSheffrey seems to have a selective memory by erasing the fact that he scored just one goal in ten appearances in a white shirt, and looked at best a yard slower to every ball than the marking defender. Mickey Doyle can certainly feel a lot more aggrieved than one Gary McSheffrey.
