League One Fixtures for 2009/10 now updated
Oct 31st. Leeds United 4-0 Yeovil Town. Ankergren, Naylor, Kisnorbo, Bromby, Hughes (Gradel 59), Snodgrass, Doyle (Kilkenny 59), Howson, Johnson, (Beckford 81), Vokes - Unused Subs - Martin, Grella, Prutton, Michalik. Att - 24,482 It just doesn't get much better than this right now for Leeds United. Two 4-0 wins in a row and a seven point gap at the top of the division. But, and I say but it could have been a little different. Yeovil dominated possession in the first half and it was a good save by Ankergren from Obika that kept Leeds in the match. Leeds were fortunate that Johnson's deflected cross ended up in the net with the keeper having more eyes on Beckford than the ball. That made it 1-0 up at half time luckily. Again in the second half Leeds were second best until Simon Grayson made a double substitution with 31 minutes to go. Max Gradel and Kilkenny came on as Doyle (who had been ineffective) and Hughes exited stage left. Bradley Johnson went left full, Snodgrass changed wings and Gradel does what h e does best, torturing defences. Pretty soon Leeds were on top and creating chances for fun. Vokes went close and then it was Howson's turn, before Gradel scored with a neat finish on 68 minutes. It was 3-0 on 78 minutes when Beckford netted. Simon Grauson quickly replaced him with the in form Kandol and he duly scored on 84 minutes with a superb header. Simon Grayson was obviously delighted but didn't paper over any cracks : "Teams have made it difficult for us with one up front and crowding midfield which can frustrate us. We were lucky to be one up at half time. I told the players in the dressing room it was like watching paint dry. I was going to make changes at half time but I decided to wait. I felt we needed a spark, an injection of life. We have good players in the penalty area like Beckford and Vokes. All of a sudden the changed let us put balls into the box and ask them question. Soon Max got his well deserved goal and players enjoyed playing when we were two up. Max can be a handful and and you have to give Tresor credit. He's a real handful. We have players on the bench that would get into most teams in the division, and it certainly keeps the whole squad on their toes. Sam (Vokes) has played his first full 90 minutes and I am delighted that Wolves have let me have him here until January. Elsewhere the results came out of heaven for United. Charlton were humbled 1-3 at Carlisle, Colchester lost 1-2 at Millwall and Leeds United have moved seven points clear at the top. No team in League One has scored more goals than Leeds United and they are also the only side to have single digit goals conceded. Lucky ? I think not Mr Parkinson of Charlton.
October 27th. Bristol Rovers 0-4 Leeds United. Ankergren, Bromby, Kisnorbo, Naylor, Hughes, Snodgrass, Doyle (Kilkenny 73), Howson, Johnson, Beckford (Gradel 76), Vokes (Kandol 80). Unused Subs - Crowe, Prutton, Michalik, Martin. Att 11,448 (1,640 Leeds) Simon Grayson named an unchanged side for this tricky League One tie at the Memorial Stadium. His selection proved correct as Beckford scored after just nine minutes after being put through incisively by Doyle. He nearly netted a second goal a minute later when he rounded the keeper but couldn't score from a tight angle. Rovers had one decent effort in the first half when Ankergren (the clown) fumbled a shot on to the post but Leeds were in control in the main. On 53 minutes Beckford lobbed just over the top, but Leeds weren't to be denied on 55 minutes after Vokes scored his first goal for United following a good one two between Snodgrass and Beckford. Minutes later Howson went close but Beckford scored his second on 65 minutes when he finished with aplomb after good work by Howson. Beckford, smelling a hat-trick went close again and Bradley Johnson almost scored his customary goal. Max Gradel and Tresor Kandol were brought on and it was good to see the latter score Leeds fourth goal when he slid home a pass from Gradel. It could have been eight or nine but 4-0 against the only side in all four divisions (who up until now) had scored in every game was a highly professional performance. Leeds are four points clear with a superior goal difference and that's good news as Yeovil head to Elland Road this Saturday. Simon Grayson : Tonight we ever did so well. Players kept working their socks off. We could have took our foot off the gas but they all kept working. It was an opportunity to put things right. There was a spark about our creativity. Jermaine worked his socks off and he could easily have had four or five. As a group and as individuals we did great tonight. Sam showed what he is all about and looked a handful in only his third game. It's difficult when you come in and don't know the players or their game. Tresor got his head down and kept working and he has gotten his rewards. We have individuals who can keep clean sheets but we win as a team and we lose as a team.
Sat Oct 24th. Ankergren, Bromby, Kisnorbo, Naylor, Hughes, Snodgrass (Gradel 78) Doyle (Kilkenny 78) Howson, Johnson, Beckford, Vokes (Kandol 70). Unused Subs - Fielding, Crowe, Michalik, Prutton. Well, we knew had to come eventually. It was unlucky 13 for Leeds as they went down for the third time in their last three visits to the New Den. The hosts started the brighter and were ahead after just three minutes when Neil Harris scored with an easy header. Howson then ran through the Millwall defence but his shot was saved and Snodgrass failed with the follow up. two corner kicks later, Milwall failed to clear and Kisnorno fired home for his first Leeds United goal. The 2,000 travelling Leeds fans went into raptures. It was ende to end football in a thrilling game. On 33 minutes Vokes nearly put Leeds ahead but his effort was blocked as the ball was about to fall nicely for him. Bradley Johnson twice went close and Voked did well to defend a Millwall attack Three minuted before half time, Snodgrass was denied a penalty when his shot struck a Millwall hand. The 14,104 crowd (Millwall's biggest since 2004) certainly got their money' worth as the first half drew to a close. The second half began in frantic style as Johnson curled a free just outside the upright and Millwall's Morrisson went close at the other end. Snodgrass, Beckford and Schofield all went close. With 20 minutes left, Kandol came on for Vokes and his early work involved defending Millwall attacks. Gradel came on with 12 minutes to go but it was Milwall's sub, Alexander who scored with a back post header on 83 minutes. United's response saw a Howson shot cleared off the line, and in the final minute Kandol couldn't believe his luck when a fine opportunist strike rebounded off the inside of the woodwork. It wasn't to be their day. The perfomance merited at least a draw. Elsewehere, Charlton only drew at Gillingham, Southampton defeated MK Dons 3-1, Colchester won 2-1 v Walsall and Norwich beat Swindon Town 1-0. Our opponents this Tuesday night, Bristol Rvs lost 1-2 at home to Yeovil Town. United remain top by one point.
Monday 19th of October. Leeds United 2-1 Norwich City. Higgs (Ankergren 16), Crowe, Bromby, Naylor, Hughes, Snodgrass (Gradel 80), Doyle, Johnson, Howson, Beckford, Volkes (Kandol 74) - Unused Subs - Prutton, Kilkenny, Grella, Michalik. Att - 19,192. Norwich came to Elland Road in fine form and quickly set about playing their pretty football. Naylor flattened Wes Hoolahan after just 30 secs and earned a booking and a couple of stitches over his eye for his trouble. Hoolahan missed an early chance and Higgs made hard work out of a simple shot, but did well to turn the rebound away. It was obvious he was uncomfortable and Ankergren replaced him after just 16 minutes. Leeds were ring rusty having not played for a fortnight, but always looked like scoring each time they attacked. Beckford did well to chase down the defender to win a corner. From the resulting Snodgrass corner, 7/1 Bradley Johnson headed home on 15 minutes. Leeds started to look more comfortable but Norwich made it 1-1 when Holt got in behind Johnson to finish well from a good cross from the right. Leeds started the second half better but it was Ankergren who had to make a double save to keep it at 1-1. The visitors began to get their passing game going again but Leeds defence these days is made of sterner stuff . Snodgrass nearly scored from a free kick but Forster made a super save. With 16 minutes left, Grayson went for broke and threw on Kandol for Volkes. The big man quickly made his presence known by winning every header and holding the ball up better. Then with 10 minutes left, he threw on Gradel for the ineffective Snodgrass. Gradel quickly had a super run and decent shot. He then linked with Kandol and set up Beckford but the keeper made a tremendous save. Beckford then just failed to get his foot to a super cross. It was all Leeds who had most of the chances all night despite finishing second on possession. Then in the 92nd minute Beckford won a poor kick out to race through on the keeper and make it 2-1 and send the Louth branch into raptures in Bennetts. Lambert felt his side was robbed. More astute observers will point to the amount of chances Leeds created and the fact that their defence was more resolute and their attack more potent. We are two points clear at the top with a game in hand. Well done Simon Grayson in recalling the in form Kandol and Gradel certainly had a debut to remember.
Monday 19th of Oct. Leeds made a double loan swoop ahead of their Monday night clash with Norwich by signing striker, Sam Volkes from Leicester until January 1st and speedy winger, Max Gradel from Leicester on a one month loan. Volkes, 19 years old scored 8 goals in 39 games (32 of which was as a sub) for Wolves last season and is a welsh international. He made his name at Bournmouth where he scored goals for fun. Gradel, aged 21, made 31 appearances for Leicester last season when the Foxes won promotion, and ironically played with Volkes at Bournmouth when he was on loan during season 2007/08 when he scored 10 goals in 31 games.
Sat 17th of Oct. A mixed bag of results. Charlton scraped home 2-1 v Huddersfield Town, MK Dons beat Gillingham 2-0, Colchester drew 1-1 at Wycombe and Bristol Rvs lost 2-1 at Southend. We are one point from top with two matches in hand, starting with Norwich at home on Monday night.
Fri 16th of Oct. The council allegedly ran out of time (because of due diligence) in trying to purchase Thorp arch - missing the deadling for the re-purchase. Something doesn't smell right and I figure Mr Bates is the man responsible. Leeds were also linked with a loan move for Wolves' striker Sam Volkes (formerly the goal scoring machine with Bournmouth.
Oct 10th. United didn't play today but Charlton failed to capitalize as they drew with Oldham, where Gregan was superb in defence. In form Colchester and Norwich both won as did MK Dons who were fortunate to defeat Walsall.
Oct 6th. Leeds 2-0 Darlington JPT. Ankergren, Bromby, Naylor, Michalik, Hughes (Johnson 80), Robinson, Kilkenny, Prutton, White, Grella, (Somma 70) Kandol (Showunmi 46). Steve Staunton watched from the s tand as his new charges faced a very strong Leeds side. Unitec faced a £5,000 fine unless they fielded at least five players with most appearances for the season. Kandol quickly proved a threat as he looked to impress Simon Grayson (who incidentally won this competition as a player with Blackpool). United were ahead on 24 minutes when a deflected shot by Robinson found the net. Kandol went close a couple of times before scoring on 28 minutes with a super shot to the top corner. It was all Leeds but they sloppily conceded a goal right on half time from substitute, Smith. Leeds were extremely poor in the second half., perhaps because the useful Kandol was replaced by the frustrating Showunmi for the whole second half. Darlington should have had a penalty when Bromby handled in the box. United were donimant but wasteful. Grella had several chances, Kilkenny went close, and Naylor also nearly made it three. United's injury jinx continued when Somma replaced Grella on 70 minutes but pulled up with a hamstring injury just 14 minutes later. In the final minute Darlington's keeper Liversedge received a straight red carded for taking out Showunmi when through on goal. Robin on missed the resulting free kick and the match finished 2-1. Simon Grayson didn't hold back in the criticism of his side after the match and one couldn't fault the manager for being angry with a lack lustre performance. Only Tresor Kandol could be happy with his performance and if the manager is serious about playing the right striker along side Beckford (in Becchio's absence) he should look no further than Kandol. He is a much better option than both Grella and Showunmi and this partnership has been prolific in the past. If he was good enough for Charlton then why not for Leeds ?
Oct 5th. Leeds City council have purchased Thorp Arch and will rent the training complex back to Leeds at "no cost to the taxpayers". Leeds also have the option to buy at a favourable price when their finances improve.
Oct 5th. Leeds have settled their dispute with Man City over the transfer of two 14 year olds to the Eastland club. George Swan (son of former player, Peter) and Louis Hutton both left Leeds academy recently, and Ken Bates expressed his "satisfaction" with the compensation.
Oct 4th. Leeds United 0-0 Charlton Athletic. Att - 31,830. Ankergren, Bromby, Naylor, Kisnorbo, Hughes (Robinson 65), Howson, Doyle, Kilkenny (Grella 79), Johnson, Beckford, Becchio (Showunmi 36). Unused Subs - Fielding, Prutton, Kandol and Michalik. The eagerly awaited clash of the big two in League One was over shadowed by a horrendous wind that made playing conditions difficult at best. T he best chance of the first half fell to Beckford as he (for once) got in goal side of Sodje but his powerful shot went wide. Hoson put a super pass across the six yard box and Beckford just failed to get a foot to it. Bradley Johnson, on fire this season (and the best player on the park in the first half) had a superb curling right footed shot turned around the post by the keeper. Disaster for Leeds truck on 35 minutes when Becchio went down with a nasty ankle injury. He was stretchered off and sent straight to hospital for a scan. The second half continued in similar vein, with both sides on top, but with the Addicks having slightly mores possession. They tested Ankergren just twice when he was comfortable with both saves. Beckford and Showunmi were ineffective as a striking partnership, with both players too far apart to form any kind of trouble to Charlton. Both sides struggled with the conditions as fear of losing became more of a factor as the match progressed. Frazer Richardson returning to his spiritual home had a good game and received a tremendous ovation on ninety minutes. Thoroughly deserved. It ended all square with Leeds still three points clear at the top. Our match against Bristol Rvs who were hammered at Norwich is postponed next week because of international call ups. This will give us time to get players back for the Norwich game.
